Notable Achievements During the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Exciting New Milestones in Men’s Gymnastics

August 13, 2024

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games showcased remarkable performances across various disciplines, including gymnastics. From historic victories to first-time accomplishments, athletes from around the world made their mark on the Olympic stage. This year's Games were not only a testament to individual excellence but also a celebration of the growing global reach of the sport.

Medalists

  • This is the second Olympics in a row where the all-around winner also secured victory on the high bar.

  • Japan continues to dominate in the all-around competition, having won the title at the last four Olympics.

  • Greece’s Eleftherios Petrounias won an individual medal (on still rings) for the third consecutive Games. Liu Yang was the only other athlete in Paris who also earned medals at Rio, Tokyo and Paris.

  • Two athletes successfully defended their Olympic titles from Tokyo: Zou Jingyuan on parallel bars and Liu Yang on still rings.

Notable Firsts

  • Four different nations—Philippines, Colombia, Kazakhstan, and Ireland—won their first-ever medals in gymnastics.

  • Carlos Yulo became the second athlete, and the first male athlete from the Philippines (in any sport), to win gold at the Olympic Games.

  • Canada qualified for the team final in gymnastics for the first time.

  • Jordan (Ahmad Abu Al-Soud) and Syria (Lais Najjar) participated in Olympic gymnastics for the very first time, marking a historic moment for these countries.

It’s hard to measure the impact that these historic moments and victories will have on the sport. However, it marks an exciting time in men’s gymnastics as we look forward the next quad. We can only hope that the firsts are just that—the beginning of something more.
