Canadian Gymnastics Olympic Trials Day 1 Results and Interviews

Félix Dolci Leads the AA Field

June 7, 2024

Félix Dolci leads the all-around competition with an 84.516 ahead of 2020 Olympian, René Cournoyer (82.932) and Pan American Silver Medalist, William Emard (80.848). At last year's world championships, Dolci decided to sit out of the all-around competition to give Canada a better shot at qualifying a team to the Olympic Games. It worked. Canada qualified their first full team to an Olmpic Games since 2008.

Veteran of the team, Cournoyer told Olympics Canada, " I went to the last Olympics by myself but doing it with the whole team is an entirely different level of happiness an daccomplishment." This year, the team want to make the Olympic team finals.

While these three members of the 2023 World Championships performed well, the other two struggled on their key apparatus, pommel horse. Both Jayson Rampersad and Zachary Clay will need to hit pommel horse to make their case for Olympic selection. Others in the mix after day 1 include three-time world team member Sam Zakutney and 2023 World alternate, Ioannis Chronopoulos.

Olympic Selection Procedures

According to the selection procedures, the top two in the all-around following the two days of competition will recieve an automatic nomination. After that, it becomes unclear. The selection committee will asses the results from the competition and nominate three additional athletes whose scores help them with their main objective: to qualify a team into the team final at the 2024 Olympic Games.
