2026 Olympics? The question everyone wants to know is: "Is the Pommel Horse Guy competing at the Olympics?" The short answer...no, but the long answer is way more interesting. Stephen Nedoroscik, a two-time Olympic Bronze Medalist has a doppelgänger and his name is Aidan Oldenburg, a member of the U.S. Men's Curling Team. Both athletes wear glasses, both have curly brown hair, and both have a nerdy sidie with Oldenburg's fascination with yo-yos and juggling matching Nedoroscik's love of the Rubik's cube. Team USA set a good luck message from Stephen to Aidan where they each offered to give the other a lesson in gymnastics and curling respectively. While the resemblence between the two is uncanny, it's Nedoroscik who does have an actual twin, Anastasia who has cheered him on in his gymnastics endeavors since childhood. Winter Cup While Nedoroscik is probably the most well-known U.S. gymnast, he is not currently on the U.S. Senior National Team after a less-than-ideal performance at the 2025 U.S. National Championships. Nedoroscik had taken the majority of the year following the Olympics off of serious training due to his time on Dancing With The Stars; and, had also been struggling with a hip injury that prevented him from performing his best. In October of 2025, he received surgery to repair hip dysplasia, CAM deformity, and a full labral tear. While Nedoroscik is undeniably making strides in the gym, he will not be ready to compete this weekend at the 2026 Winter Cup in Louisville, Kentucky. Nedoroscik will need to medically petition, likely to the injury reserve team where his EVO teammates Shane Wiskus and Alex Diab currently hold residence. He is expected to return fully to competition at the 2026 U.S. National Championships in Phoenix later this year. Despite not competing in the Olympics, the popular gymnast continues to define his own path Ian Gunther is one of the most recognized names in American gymnastics, captivating millions with his viral TikTok videos that showcase his training routines, share insights into the sport, and highlight his camaraderie with fellow Stanford athletes like 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Asher Hong and U.S. alternate Khoi Young. Gunther’s credentials are impressive. He’s a four-time NCAA Champion with Stanford, and he’s been diligently working on a new high bar element that he hopes will one day be named after him in the gymnastics code of points. Is Ian Gunther Competing in the Paris Olympics? Unfortunately, no. Ian Gunther did not secure a high enough score at the 2024 U.S. Nationals to advance to the U.S. Olympic Trials. The Paris Olympic team was determined based on performances at these two pivotal competitions. Although Gunther is a talented elite gymnast, he is not currently part of the U.S. national team, which consists of the top 20 gymnasts in the country. The competition for a spot on the Olympic team was especially fierce this year, with even seasoned Olympians like Shane Wiskus and Yul Moldauer, as well as world medalists like Khoi Young and Donnell Whittenburg, missing out on the Paris team. Ian explained the selection process in the video below. Could Ian Gunther Make It to the Olympics Someday? Making the Olympic or World Gymnastics team is an incredible challenge. These teams consist of only five members, and not only do athletes need to be among the best in the U.S., but they must also contribute to the highest-scoring team combination.  At the 2024 U.S. Nationals, Gunther competed in five events, consistently scoring in the mid-to-high 13s. His best performance was on the high bar, where he placed 8th, followed by a strong showing on rings. However, Gunther’s routines currently lack the difficulty levels seen in other top U.S. gymnasts. To realistically aim for a spot on future World Championships or Olympic teams, Gunther would need to increase the difficulty across all of his routines. What’s Next for Ian Gunther? Gunther has already expressed his desire to have a new high bar element named after him in the code of points. To achieve this, he would need to successfully compete with the skill at the World Championships, Olympic Games, or a World Cup event. Qualifying for a World Cup event might be Gunther’s best shot. These events are individual apparatus competitions, allowing athletes to focus on excelling in one or two events rather than contributing to an overall team score, as required at the World Championships or Olympics. Even though he’s not currently on the national team, Gunther can still compete in various elite competitions within the U.S., such as the Winter Cup. In early 2024, during one such competition— Beach Blast —Gunther spoke with Neutral Deductions about his future in the sport. Gymnastics Is More Than the Olympics For many viewers, the Olympics might seem like the pinnacle of gymnastics. However, elite gymnastics is a year-round global endeavor. While there are only 96 gymnasts in Paris, there are over 1,000 active elite gymnasts registered with the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), not to mention the countless others competing at the collegiate level in the NCAA. Ian Gunther has shown that success in gymnastics isn’t solely defined by Olympic gold medals. He continues to find joy and fulfillment in training and competing, proving that there are many paths to success in the sport he loves. A. Sportsperson of the Year Rhys McClenaghan (Ireland) and Lukas Dauser (Germany) were both named sportsperson of the year in their respective countries. McClenaghan and Dauser won the world title on pommel horse and parallel bars respectively at the 2023 World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium earlier this year. B. CGA East vs. West Results In the second College Gymnastics Association's East vs. West, the East retained their title making them 2-0 in the series. Evan Manivong (Floor), Ignacio Yockers (Pommel Horse), Ashton Anaya (Still Rings), Zac Tiderman (Vault), Josh Karnes (Parallel Bars), and Sam Phillips (High Bar) won their respective event titles. Hashimoto Daiki selected for 2024 Paris Olympics According to this article, World and Olympic all-around champion, Hashimoto Daiki has been selected for Japan's Olympic Team. Two of the remaining four spots will be allocated to the top two all-arounders at the 2024 NHK Cup. The final two spots will also be awarded following the conclusion of the NHK cup and will be awarded to the athletes who will best complement the existing three team members. E. Former Michigan Athlete and Coach Passed Away Former University of Michigan athlete and coach, Geoff Corrigan passed away due to unknown causes. A. NCAA Intrasquads December provides the first look into the 2023 - 2024 NCAA season. Army, Navy, Michigan, Illinois, William and Mary, Nebraska, Simpson, and Oklahoma have completed their intrasquads with Ohio State and the CGA's East vs. West to come. The meet will be streamed live on YouTube at 5 pm ET. B. Colin Van Wicklen Retired 2018 World Team Member and 5-time National Team Member, Colin Van Wicklen has retired. The 4-time NCAA champion said in his post that, "while it's hard to officially call it quits, I'm thankful for the journey, the experiences, and the life long lessons I have learned along the way." C. Olympic Champion Welcomes New Baby 2012 Olympic Champion, Yang Hak Seon, welcomed his first child on December 7, 2023 at 9:29 am. D. Illia Kovtun Underwent Surgery Illia Kovtun's longtime coach, Iryna Gorbacheva, revealed that the two-time world medalist underwent surgery on his foot in preparation of the busy 2024 season. According to the post, three months prior to his surgery, doctors told Kovtun that he shouldn't even walk up stairs but Kovtun sought to compete with Ukraine at the 2023 World Gymnastics Championships to earn a spot at the Olympic Games. Kovtun underwent two surgeries at once with the hope of alleviating the pain by at least 50%. E. A. Men's NCAA Pre-Season Begins This weekend, NCAA teams from around the country will showcase their talent at pre-season intrasquads. German Bundesliga Final KTV Straubenhardt took the Deutsche Turnliga Finale title ahead of TV Wetzgau in a final score of 48 - 17. The winning team's roster was filled with top German stars like Lukas Dauser, Nick Klessing, Nils Dunkel, Pascal Brendal, and Andreas Brettschneider as well as Canadian, Felix Dolci and Ukrainian Illia Kovtun. C. European Gymnastics Votes against the return of Russian and Belarusian Athletes While the International Federation made provisions for Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to competition next year, the General Assembly of European Gymnastics voted against allowing athletes to return. Accordingly, many believe that this will remove any avenue for athletes from Russia and Belarus to earn an individual spot for the Paris Olympic Game.s D. European Gymnastics Online Test Event As more entities search for ways to make virtual gymnastics meets possible, European Gymnastics trialed an online competition for pommel horse, parallel bars, and horizontal bar. Italy's Edoardo De Rosa won pommel horse and parallel bars and Ukraine's Radomyr Stelmakh won horizontal bar. The competition was in partnerships with Elevien, and gymnastics meet app. E. Nazar Chepurnyi Awarded "Honored Master of Sports" 2023 World Vault Medalist, Nazar Chepurnyi has been awarded Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine. A. Team USA Competes in the Czech Republic Four Stanford athletes represented Team USA in the Czech Republic at the 2023 Sokol Grand Prix. The mixed-pairs competition consisted of 12 teams and former national team member, Ian Gunther, took home second place with Canada's, Shallon Olsen. Current national team member, Taylor Burkhart was paired with Czech Republic's Alice Vlkova and took home bronze. Riley Loos and Blake Sun finished fifth and eighth respectively. More information can be found here. B. USA Gymnastics Men's Program Updates There are two main updates from the U.S. men's program. The first is meeting minutes from the Senior Selection Committee (SSC); and the second is a webinar on NCAA men's gymnastics sustainability and growth linked down below. Bullet Points from the Committee Minutes 2023 Olympic Procedures are not finalized. The USOPC requested clarification and a second draft has been sent for review. All five members of the 2023 World Championships Team (Fred Richard, Khoi Young, Paul Juda, Asher Hong, and Yul Moldauer) will retain their spots on National Team til June meaning they do not need to compete at Winter Cup. 2023 World Alternate, Colt Walker, will also retain his spot. Senior Development Team Members, Joshua Karnes and Landen Blixt will also retain their spots. 12 additional Spots will be available on the Senior National Team for a total of twenty. The SSC indicated that the top team will be sent to the DTB Pokal in Stuttgart, Germany, so that should be some indication of who is in high consideration for the Olympic Team. C. Fred Richard Links Up with Snoop Dogg Snoop Dogg and Fred Richard freestyled together at the Team USA promotional event ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. D. Northern European Championships The 2023 Northern European Championships were held in Halmstad, Sweden on November 25th and 26th. Finland's Elias Koski took the top mark breaking the coveted 80.00 barrier with an 80.398. His teammate, Marcus Pietarinen took home silver with a 78.397, and Joe Cemlyn-Jones of Wales grabbed bronze with a 78.199. Full results can be found here. E. A. Russia and Belarus The International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) has announced that athletes from Russia and Belarus may return to competition as of January 1, 2024.
