Shi Cong Leads Chinese Nationals Ahead of Zhang Boheng
April 25, 2024
Three-time world medalist, Shi Cong, leads the standings at the 2024 Chinese National Championships ahead of 2021 World All-Around Champion, Zhang Boheng. Zhang, widely considered as one of the best all-arounders in the world, sits in second due to several falls on floor exercise. Despite his less-than-ideal floor routine, he still managed an 85.250 which would have been good enough for a silver medal at last year's World Championships.
According to this post, the National Championships will serve as the first Olympic Qualifier for the Chinese Team. Only two spots will be confirmed following these championships. The first will be for an all-arounder who has won an all-around medal at one of the last two World Championships; this can only be Zhang Boheng. However, he must score over 87.5 at nationals or win the all-around title. Both are possibilities for him should he hit on day two.
The second automatically earned spot is reserved for an athlete who can contend for an event final gold in Paris this summer. Further specifications include must have been a world champion at either the 2022 or 2023 World Championships and must have a 6.7 D score. The athlete must also be top six on a second event. The only athlete to meet this requirement is Zou Jingyuan. Following day 1 of Chinese Nationals, Zou earned a 6.9 D score and sits in the lead on parallel bars. He currently sits in 3rd on still rings and 8th on pommel horse. Final Olympic spots will be awarded at an internal trial in June.
